The Republic Act No. 10175, which is also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, has implemented today, October 3. This law makes SOPA look reasonable. It threatens to take away our online freedom of speech, our rights to share/like a picture, upload videos in YouTube, download stuff in Torrents, etc. And worse, it violates the constitution.
The law states that whoever caught for online libel will spend 12 years in jail. Imagine how long it is. It’s worse than being jailed for rape. Why charge someone for such a very small thing? It’s very unfair.
Sen. Tito Sotto is responsible for inserting the libel clause into the law. He was also responsible for plagiarizing quotes & ideas from other people & denies it, although he was caught. And with this Cybercrime Law, will he be excused from plagiarizing? No. He will make things worse by taking away our online rights. Pres. Noynoy Aquino reviewed the law & agreed to it, which is a big mistake for us Pinoys. Looks like this is now called Cyber Martial Law.
Recently, we’ve done more than everything to protest the Cybercrime law. A group of Hacktivists called Anonymous Philippines had hacked some of the government websites, notably NTC, PRCP, BSP & MWSS. And 6 petitions, one of them is made by the Kabataan Partylist, were filed against it. Since yesterday, we were encouraged to change our profile pics to “black”, and posted “████████████████████████. (ʀᴀ ɴᴏ. 10175)” as our statuses.
It’s all your fault, Tito Sotto! Why libel the law if you’re the one plagiarizing anyone’s speeches? Instead, you should have accepted the truth, and apologize to all of us. Besides, you’re caught, the media has the evidence, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
And thanks to you, PNoy! You agreed to the law. Now you (and the congress and some of the senators who agreed to the law) have limited our freedom, especially in the online world. Think again! If Ninoy is still alive today, he ‘d be very disappointed at what you have done. If you want to bring back our trust in you, PNoy, dump the Cybercrime Law and BRING BACK OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
